NFL Draft
By Brett Monroe
When the first talk about the 2006 NFL draft started you may have heard one name for the number one overall pick, Reggie Bush. Bush was almost guaranteed the money and the number one overall pick that would land him in Houston playing with the Texans. But you know what they say, “it’s not over till it’s over.” Bush’s contract with Houston fell through when the Texans decided to draft a defensive end, Mario Williams instead of Bush. Houston signed Williams under a six year 54 million dollar deal. Many analysts and fans felt that Houston made a bad and wasteful pick, and missed out on the best talent in the whole draft (Bush). The Reggie Bush controversy wasn’t the only one out there, what about the 2004 Heisman trophy winner Matt Leinhart from USC. Leinhart was projected to be at the least a number five pick. Leinhart dropped all the way to the tenth pick to Arizona.
As for the Detroit Lions, they might have had the best draft in a couple years. Maybe not talents wise but as far as depth and both sides of the ball, yes. Detroit used their first round pick for an outside linebacker named Ernie Sims from Florida State. Second round they drafted Daniel Bullocks, a strong safety from Nebraska, third round they went offensively and drafted Brian Calhoun, a running back from Wisconsin. Through the fourth and seventh rounds the Lions drafted two offensive linemen, and another linebacker and finally a cornerback to finish up their last pick. By no means was this year’s draft disappointing for any team, good talent went good places and good teams got their share of some good rookies. For the full draft coverage log on to NFL.com
